Pressure Swing Adsorption Technology

How a PSA Nitrogen generator works

Pressurized air, or Nitrogen, is required by many industrial processes to reduce wastage of both energy and water, while enabling a wide range of products to be manufactured. Nitrogen generators convert Nitrogen into Nitrogen and Carbon Dioxide (Dioxide) at highly regulated temperatures. Nitrogen is the most abundant element in air and is used extensively in many industries for various processes, including drying, welding, cooling, refrigeration, gas production, locomotive manufacturing, photography, aircraft and automobile manufacturing among others. Nitrogen can also be used to power Nitrogen generators that use the concept of positive displacement to create large amounts of Nitrogen gas. Both types of generators are quite useful for creating controlled levels of Nitrogen in air or water.

Nitrogen generators use pressure swing adsorption technology to reach the desired nitrogen concentration or gauge. When gas mixtures containing Nitrogen are heated to a specific temperature, they expand, creating a small amount of force that draws air into the closed gas stream. The resulting gas stream is then directed through a manifold, which is specially designed to lower and increase the pressure as needed, depending on the size of the opening and the resulting gas flow rate. Nitrogen generator systems can also be employed to produce different kinds of gasses, such as carbon dioxide and water vapor, through combustion. Nitrogen generator systems also use various gas mixture components, such as: oxygen, hydrogen, carbon dioxide, and nitrogen.

To control the size of the Nitrogen generator, air or water can be passed through a pressure swing diaphragm, which allows the generator to be adjusted to different size requirements. Pressurized air or water are also passed through carbon molecular sieves, which separates various compounds, such as Nitrogen and oxygen, depending on their boiling temperatures. In order to prevent the separation of unwanted gases, an additional stage is added, known as the anode. As the pressure swings, the anode absorbs the unwanted gases and releases the Nitrogen into the gas stream. This process continues until the desired pressure is achieved. Using pressurized streamlining and Nitrogen generation, these systems can achieve the best results, while still being cost-effective.
