Traditionally, nitrogen cylinders have been used in industries as a source of nitrogen gas. But, due to the hassles of repetitive tasks of ordering the cylinders and also the safety issues, this trend is changing. Businesses now prefer onsite nitrogen generators.
PSA and membrane are two main technologies used for nitrogen generation. In both processes, air separation is accomplished by the removal of oxygen and other gases from the air. Each one has its own features and advantages.
Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) Technology:
If an industrial process needs highest purity level – about 99.999%, PSA N2 plant is desirable. Industries where PSA generators are installed include:
- Chemical
- Petroleum
- Metallurgy
- Electronics
- Plastic
- Food and beverage etc.
In PSA nitrogen gas plant, air flows through Carbon Molecular Sieves (CMS). Oxygen, moisture, and other particles are absorbed into pores, while nitrogen flows through that sieve. Two connected columns are installed to produce a continuous flow of nitrogen gas.
Membrane Technology:
Polymer fibres that act as a membrane to separate compressed air and produce enriched nitrogen. Oxygen, CO2, and water vapor pass through the fiber walls and are released into the atmosphere. Membrane technology generates nitrogen with adjustable purity levels between 95% and 99.5%. Industries, where membrane nitrogen generators are used, include:
- Oil and gas
- Tyre
- Mining
- Some food and beverage applications
